Natural Habitat

Found in damp environments including leaf litter, under stones, near water bodies, and in decaying organic matter or carcasses.

Diet & Feeding

Mostly predatory on other small insects and mites; some species eat fungal spores or decaying plant material.

Behavior Patterns

Distinguishable by their short elytra (wing covers) which leave most of the abdomen exposed. They are often fast runners and curl their abdomens upward like scorpions when threatened.

Risks & Benefits

Benefits the ecosystem by controlling pest populations. While generally harmless to humans, some species (like Paederus) can cause skin irritation (dermatitis) if crushed against the skin.
