Winged Ant (Ant Alate)
Family Formicidae
- Order & Family
- Order: Hymenoptera, Family: Formicidae
- Size
- 3mm to 15mm depending on species and caste
Natural Habitat
Typically found near existing ant colonies in soil, rotting wood, or within structures during swarming events.
Diet & Feeding
Liquid foods such as nectar, honeydew from aphids, and juices from fruits; they do not eat wood.
Behavior Patterns
Alates are reproductive individuals (queens and drones) that emerge in large numbers for a bridal flight to mate and establish new colonies. Once mated, queens shed their wings.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans. While they do not cause structural damage like termites, a swarm indoors may indicate a nearby colony. They are a vital food source for many birds and predatory insects.
