They are wingless, fast-running insects that thrive in high humidity. They reproduce rapidly, often through parthenogenesis, and are harmless to humans but indicate excess moisture.

They do not bite, spread disease, or damage wood, but large numbers can contaminate stored foods and their presence signals moisture issues that could lead to mold growth.
