Nocturnal and elusive; they undergo incomplete metamorphosis, shedding their exoskeleton (molting) five times before reaching maturity. The image appears to show a partial shed casing or crushed remains.

Risks include itchy welts, allergic reactions, and psychological distress. They are not known to transmit diseases to humans but are considered a significant public health pest.
