Natural Habitat

Typically found in or near the hair follicles of mammals, primarily on the human face (cheeks, nose, forehead, eyelashes).

Diet & Feeding

They feed on sebum (skin oils) and dead skin cells found within hair follicles.

Behavior Patterns

These mites are nocturnal, typically coming to the skin surface at night to mate before returning to follicles to lay eggs. Their life cycle from egg to adult is roughly 14-18 days.

Risks & Benefits

Benefits: Generally harmless commensals that may help remove excess oil. Risks: Overpopulation can contribute to skin conditions like demodicosis, rosacea, or blepharitis (eyelid inflammation) in individuals with weakened immune systems.
