Clover Mite
Bryobia praetiosa
- Order & Family
- Order: Trombidiformes, Family: Tetranychidae
- Size
- 0.75 mm to 0.85 mm (smaller than a pinhead)
Natural Habitat
Commonly found in lush lawns, turfgrass, and on building foundations, window sills, and masonry walls.
Diet & Feeding
Herbivorous; they feed on the sap of over 200 plant species, primarily grasses and clover.
Behavior Patterns
They are most active during the spring and fall. They exhibit a unique behavior of invading homes in large numbers when their outdoor environment becomes unfavorable, often crawling up walls and through window cracks.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite humans or pets and do not transmit diseases. Their primary risk is aesthetic; if crushed, they leave a red stain (not blood, but pigments from their body) on fabrics, carpets, or walls. They are generally considered a nuisance pest rather than a threat.
