- Diptera, Psychodidae
- Size
- 2mm to 5mm in length
Natural Habitat
Damp locations high in organic matter, such as bathroom drains, sewer pipes, septic tanks, and composting toilets.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on the gelatinous film of bacteria, fungi, and organic debris found in drains. Adults mostly consume liquid carbohydrates like nectar or polluted water.
Behavior Patterns
Active mainly at night; they are weak fliers and often seen crawling on walls near drains. They have a short life cycle of 7 to 28 days depending on temperature.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans as they do not bite or transmit diseases. However, their presence indicates a buildup of organic slime in plumbing. They benefit the ecosystem by breaking down organic waste, but are considered a nuisance pest in homes.
