Varied Carpet Beetle (Larva)
Scientific Name: Anthrenus verbasci
Order & Family: Order: Coleoptera (Beetles), Family: Dermestidae (Skin Beetles)
Size: Larvae grow to about 4-5 mm (0.16-0.20 inches) in length; Adults are smaller, rounder, and about 2-3 mm.

Natural Habitat
Often found indoors in dark, secluded places like closets, attics, under rugs, inside upholstered furniture, and museum collections. Outdoors, adults are found on flowers.
Diet & Feeding
The larvae feed on natural fibers and protein-based materials including wool, silk, fur, feathers, hair, dried skins, and dead insects.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae prefer dark areas and will wander in search of food (often referred to as 'woolly bears' due to their bristles). When disturbed, they may play dead. Adults are attracted to light and are often seen near windows.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Major household pest that damages clothing, carpets, and fabrics. The larval hairs (setae) can cause allergic skin reactions (carpet beetle dermatitis) in some people. Benefits: In nature, they act as decomposers of dead animal matter.
