Pelidnota punctata
- Order & Family
- Order: Coleoptera; Family: Scarabaeidae
- Size
- 25 to 30 millimeters (1.0 to 1.2 inches)
Natural Habitat
Deciduous forests, woodlands, gardens, and vineyards across North America.
Diet & Feeding
Adults feed on the foliage and fruit of grapevines; larvae (grubs) eat decaying wood from stumps and rotting logs.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are active during the summer months and are frequently attracted to porch lights at night. They fly with a loud buzzing sound and lay eggs in rotting wood.
Risks & Benefits
Harmless to humans as they do not bite or sting. While they feed on grape leaves, they are generally not considered a major agricultural pest. Larvae play a beneficial role as decomposers in the forest ecosystem.
