Behavior Patterns

The larvae (often called "woolly bears") avoid light and are most active in dark, undisturbed areas. They undergo a complete metamorphosis from egg to adult over 1 to 3 years depending on conditions.

Risks & Benefits

They are significant structural pests that can destroy clothing, carpets, and upholstery. Their larval hairs can also cause dermatitis or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
