Natural Habitat

Agricultural and residential areas with host plants, particularly the invasive Tree-of-Heaven (Ailanthus altissima).

Diet & Feeding

Phloem-feeder that drinks sap from over 70 species of plants, including fruit trees, grapevines, and hardwoods.

Behavior Patterns

Nymphs at this stage are highly mobile jumpers. They go through four molts, turning red with white spots only in the final nymphal stage before becoming winged adults in late summer.

Risks & Benefits

Highly invasive and destructive agricultural pest. They weaken plants by feeding and excrete 'honeydew' that causes mold growth. They pose no direct physical harm to humans but are a major threat to the economy and ecosystem.
