Natural Habitat

Low, damp vegetation, gardens, grassy fields, and wooded areas with thick undergrowth.

Diet & Feeding

The larval stage feeds on skin cells and digestive enzymes of host animals; adults feed on plant material and small insects.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae attach to hosts in passing; they do not burrow but pierce the skin and inject enzymes to liquify cells. After feeding for a few days, they drop off to molt into nymphs.

Risks & Benefits

Their bites cause intense itching and red welts due to an allergic reaction to their saliva. They do not feed on blood or spread disease in most regions, but are significant nuisance pests.
