Natural Habitat

Damp, rich, organic matter, often found indoors by houseplants, greenhouses, or decaying wood/leaves outdoors. Adults are attracted to light.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae feed on fungi, decaying organic matter, and sometimes plant roots (especially fine root hairs). Adults do not feed or feed on liquids.

Behavior Patterns

Adults are small, dark, slender flies that fly weakly and erratically, often seen near potted plants or windows. Larvae live in the soil or growing medium. They have a short lifespan as adults (about a week).

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Larvae can damage plant roots, especially in seedlings and young plants, leading to wilting, stunted growth, or even death of the plant. They can be a nuisance indoors. Benefits: In natural environments, they contribute to the decomposition of organic matter and can be a food source for other insects.
