Drain Fly Larva (Moth Fly Larva)
Psychodidae family
- Order & Family
- Order: Diptera; Family: Psychodidae
- Size
- Approximately 4mm to 10mm (1/8 to 3/8 inch) in length.
Natural Habitat
Typically found in moist environments rich in organic matter, such as bathroom drains, sewer pipes, septic tanks, and damp compost.
Diet & Feeding
They feed on the 'gelatinous film' or slime (biofilm) that accumulates on the sides of drains, consisting of algae, bacteria, fungi, and decaying organic matter.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae are sub-aquatic and can survive in very low oxygen environments. They utilize a specialized breathing tube to reach the surface of the water or slime. They undergo a complete metamorphosis from egg to adult in about 1 to 3 weeks.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite and are generally not known to transmit diseases to humans. However, large infestations can be a nuisance and may indicate a plumbing issue or a buildup of organic debris that could harbor bacteria. They benefit ecosystems by breaking down organic waste.
