Drain Fly
Psychoda spp.
- Order & Family
- Order: Diptera, Family: Psychodidae
- Size
- 1.5 mm to 5.0 mm (0.06 to 0.20 inches)
Natural Habitat
Commonly found in bathrooms, kitchens, and basements near drains, grease traps, and sewers.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on organic matter and biofilm (slime) found in drains; adults subsist on nectar and polluted water.
Behavior Patterns
Mainly active at night; they are poor fliers often seen crawling or making short hops. They breed in gelatinous films in pipes.
Risks & Benefits
Harmless as they do not bite; however, they can mechanically transport bacteria from sewers to clean surfaces. Larvae help break down drain-clogging organic materials.
