Nut Weevil
Curculio sp.
- Order & Family
- Coleoptera: Curculionidae
- Size
- 3 mm to 15 mm in length, characterized by a long snout (rostrum).
Natural Habitat
Found in temperate and tropical forests, orchards, and urban areas near nut-bearing trees like oaks, hickories, and pecans.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on the meat inside nuts (acorns, walnuts, chestnuts); adults feed on the leaves and developing fruit of host trees.
Behavior Patterns
Adults emerge in summer/fall to mate and drill holes into developing nuts to lay eggs. Larvae develop inside the nut and exit to pupate in the soil once the nut falls.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans and do not bite or sting. They are considered agricultural or garden pests as they can damage nut crops, but they provide a food source for birds and small mammals.
