Carpet Beetle Larva (most likely)

Natural Habitat

Indoors, especially in undisturbed areas with natural fibers like carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture, clothing made of wool or silk, and pet hair. Also found in stored food products and museums.

Diet & Feeding

Keratin-rich materials such as wool, silk, animal hair, leather, feathers, dried pet food, dead insects, and occasionally cereals or dried plant products.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae are the damaging stage, often seen crawling slowly. They tend to hide in dark, undisturbed areas. Adults are winged and often found near windows as they are attracted to light, or outdoors feeding on pollen and nectar.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Can cause significant damage to natural fiber textiles, stored dry goods, and museum collections. Some people may experience allergic reactions (dermatitis) from the larval hairs. Benefits: In nature, they play a role as scavengers, breaking down organic matter. However, indoors, they are primarily considered pests.
