Cockroach (likely American Cockroach or similar large species)
Periplaneta americana (if American Cockroach, but could be other large species)
- Order & Family
- Order: Blattodea, Family: Blattidae (for American Cockroaches)
- Size
- 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) for large species like the American Cockroach
Natural Habitat
Warm, humid, and dark environments, often found indoors in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and drains, near food sources and water. They can also live outdoors in sewers and garbage areas.
Diet & Feeding
Omnivorous scavengers, eating almost anything organic including crumbs, pet food, decaying matter, book bindings, glue, soap, and even other cockroaches when food is scarce.
Behavior Patterns
Cockroaches are primarily nocturnal and gregarious. They hide in cracks and crevices during the day and come out to feed at night. They are known for their rapid reproduction rate and can infest homes quickly. They are fast runners and can fit into very small spaces. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Cockroaches are considered pests. They can spread bacteria (e.g., Salmonella, E. coli) and pathogens, contaminate food, and trigger allergies and asthma symptoms in sensitive individuals through their droppings and shed skins. Benefits: In natural ecosystems, some species play a role as decomposers, breaking down organic matter.
