Natural Habitat

Found primarily in human pubic hair, but can occasionally be found in other coarse body hair such as eyelashes, eyebrows, beards, and armpits.

Diet & Feeding

Obligate ectoparasites that feed exclusively on human blood several times a day.

Behavior Patterns

They have specialized claws (resembling crab claws) for clinging to coarse hair. They are relatively sedentary once attached and lay eggs (nits) at the base of hair shafts. Transmission typically occurs through close physical contact.

Risks & Benefits

Risks include intense itching (pruritus due to allergic reactions to their saliva) and secondary skin infections from scratching. They do not transmit pathogens like body lice. There are no ecological benefits to humans.
