Casemaking Clothes Moth (Larva)
Tinea pellionella
- Order & Family
- Order: Lepidoptera, Family: Tineidae
- Size
- Larvae grow up to 10-12mm in length; cases are typically the same size or slightly longer.
Natural Habitat
Indoor environments, particularly in dark, undisturbed areas like closets, under furniture, or storage bins containing animal-based textiles.
Diet & Feeding
Keratin-rich materials including wool, silk, fur, feathers, hair, leather, and occasionally carpets or upholstery fibers.
Behavior Patterns
The larva spins a protective silken tube or 'case' that it drags along as it feeds, incorporating fibers from the material it is eating into the case. They typically avoid light and remain hidden during the larval stage.
Risks & Benefits
Significant household pest; larvae cause permanent damage to clothing, rugs, and heirloom textiles by chewing holes. They are not harmful to human health but can cause substantial economic and sentimental loss.
