Behavior Patterns

Active during daylight; they are attracted to the smell of fermentation. They have a very rapid life cycle, often evolving from egg to adult in about 10 days.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans but considered a nuisance pest. They can cross-contaminate food with bacteria found in drains and compost; however, they are essential in scientific research as model organisms.
