Natural Habitat

Primarily the human scalp, particularly behind the ears and near the neckline.

Diet & Feeding

Obligate ectoparasites that feed exclusively on human blood several times a day.

Behavior Patterns

They are wingless and cannot jump; they spread via direct head-to-head contact. They attach their eggs (nits) to hair shafts near the scalp.

Risks & Benefits

Can cause intense itching and scalp irritation. They are not known to spread disease, but secondary skin infections can occur from scratching.
