Natural Habitat

Originally from East Asia, they are now an invasive species found across North America and Europe. They thrive in agricultural fields, orchards, and residential gardens, often entering homes in the fall to overwinter.

Diet & Feeding

Polyphagous herbivore; feeds on over 100 plant species including fruits (apples, peaches), vegetables (peppers, tomatoes), and ornamental plants by piercing the skin and sucking out juices.

Behavior Patterns

Known for seeking shelter indoors during autumn when temperatures drop (diapause). They release a pungent, cilantro-like odor when threatened or crushed as a defense mechanism.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: A major agricultural pest causing significant damage to fruit and vegetable crops. While not physically dangerous to humans (they do not bite or sting), they are a nuisance pest in homes. Benefits: Few, though they are a food source for some predators like spiders and parasitic wasps.
