Natural Habitat

Found in leaf litter and soil; often emerging onto the surface of snow during late winter and early spring thaw.

Diet & Feeding

Decomposers that feed on decaying organic matter, fungal spores, algae, and bacteria in the soil.

Behavior Patterns

Actually a type of springtail, they use a fork-like appendage called a furcula to catapult themselves into the air. They produce an anti-freeze protein that allows them to remain active in sub-zero temperatures.

Risks & Benefits

Completely harmless to humans, pets, and structures; they are beneficial to the ecosystem as they help break down organic matter and enrich the soil.
