Natural Habitat

Damp, warm, and humid environments. Found in homes, libraries, museums, and food storage areas. They prefer dark, undisturbed places and can be found under wallpaper, in books, food pantries, and around plumbing.

Diet & Feeding

Fungi, mold, starch-based materials like book bindings, wallpaper paste, cereal products, dried foods, and insect fragments.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal. Avoids light. Moves quickly when disturbed. Reproduces rapidly, especially in high humidity. Some species are parthenogenetic (reproduce without males).

Risks & Benefits

Generally considered harmless to humans, as they do not bite or transmit diseases. However, they can be a nuisance pest, especially when present in large numbers, and can cause damage to books, stored food products, and other starchy materials. Their presence can also indicate high humidity and potential mold growth in a building.
