Natural Habitat

Inhabits heated buildings, greenhouses, and hospitals; prefers moist, dark areas near warmth such as wall voids, under floors, and around pipes.

Diet & Feeding

Omnivorous; scavenges on a wide variety of foods including fats, proteins, and sweets (sugar, syrups, jelly, honey).

Behavior Patterns

Forms large colonies with multiple queens (polygynous). Known for 'budding' where a queen and workers move to a new site, making them difficult to control. Largely nocturnal or active in low light.

Risks & Benefits

Risk: Major nuisance and public health pest, especially in hospitals where they can spread pathogens like Salmonella and Streptococcus. Benefit: Very minimal; they act as scavengers in the ecosystem but are almost entirely viewed as pests in human environments.
