Natural Habitat

Gardens, agricultural fields, orchards, and wooded areas where aphids are present.

Diet & Feeding

Mainly aphids; also consumes mites, mealybugs, thrips, and other small soft-bodied insects.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae carry a 'backpack' of debris, including the dried husks of their prey, lichen, and dust, for camouflage. They are highly active predators with sickle-shaped mandibles used to inject enzymes and suck out the insides of prey.

Risks & Benefits

Highly beneficial to the ecosystem and gardeners as an effective biological pest control. They are harmless to humans, though they may occasionally deliver a minor, non-toxic nip if handled.
