Natural Habitat

Diet & Feeding
Adults feed on liquid or semi-liquid substances including food waste, rotting organic material, and secretions. They use sponging mouthparts to liquefy solid food with saliva.
Behavior Patterns
Active during the day, resting at night. They exhibit a four-stage life cycle (egg, larva, pupa, adult) which can be completed in as little as 7 to 10 days in warm conditions.
Risks & Benefits
Risks include the transmission of numerous pathogens such as salmonella and E. coli by carrying bacteria on their bodies and mouthparts. Benefits are limited but include their role as decomposers and a food source for other animals.
