Natural Habitat

Primarily feed on juices from overripe fruits and vegetables, and the yeast associated with fermenting organic materials.

Behavior Patterns

Attracted to light and fermented odors; they have a very rapid life cycle from egg to adult in about 8-10 days under warm conditions.

Risks & Benefits

Generally considered a nuisance pest. While they do not bite, they can potentially transport bacteria from unsanitary surfaces onto food products. In science, they are highly beneficial as a model organism for genetic research.
