Natural Habitat
Found in moist environments containing decaying organic matter, such as drains, sewage systems, septic tanks, and wet compost.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on the gelatinous film of bacteria, fungi, algae, and organic debris found in drains. Adults feed on nectar or polluted water.
Behavior Patterns
Poor fliers that often crawl or hop. They are nocturnal and are frequently found resting on walls near drains. They have a short life cycle (7 to 28 days) and go through complete metamorphosis.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite or transmit diseases to humans. While they are considered a nuisance pest, their larvae are beneficial to ecosystems as they help break down the organic solids that clog pipes and sewage systems.
