Fungus Gnat

Natural Habitat

Damp, organic-rich environments, often associated with potting soil of houseplants, greenhouses, and compost piles.

Diet & Feeding

Adult fungus gnats feed on liquid, while larvae feed on fungi, decaying organic matter, and plant roots.

Behavior Patterns

Adults are weak fliers and are often seen near the soil surface or flying erratically around plants. Larvae live in the soil and can damage plant roots. They are often attracted to moisture and light.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Larvae can damage plant roots, especially in young seedlings or chemically-sensitive plants, leading to wilting or stunted growth. They are primarily a nuisance pest. Benefits: In certain ecosystems, some species may contribute to decomposition processes, but generally considered a pest in horticulture.
