Corydalus cornutus
- Order & Family
- Megaloptera, Corydalidae
- Size
- 2 to 5 inches (5 to 12.5 cm) in length
Natural Habitat
Found near clean, fast-flowing freshwater streams and rivers where their aquatic larvae (hellgrammites) develop.
Diet & Feeding
Adults short-lived and rarely eat, though they may consume nectar or water. Larvae are voracious predators of aquatic insects.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are nocturnal and often attracted to bright lights. They are weak fliers. Females lack the long, sickle-like mandibles of males but have short, powerful pincers used for defense.
Risks & Benefits
Harmless to humans unless handled, where females can deliver a painful (but non-venomous) bite. They are excellent environmental indicators of high water quality.
