Drain Fly Larva
Scientific Name: Psychodidae (family)
Order & Family: Order: Diptera; Family: Psychodidae
Size: 3 to 10 mm in length

Natural Habitat
Found in moist, organic-rich environments such as sink drains, sewers, septic tanks, and damp soil.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on the gelatinous film of bacteria, fungi, and decomposing organic matter (biofilm) within pipes and drains.
Behavior Patterns
They live within the slime lining of drains. They have a short life cycle (7-28 days) and can survive in low-oxygen environments by using a breathing tube to reach the surface of the film.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite and are generally harmless to humans, but their presence can indicate a clog or hygiene issue. In large numbers, they can be a nuisance and potentially carry bacteria from sewage to food surfaces.
