Clover Mite
Bryobia praetiosa
- Order & Family
- Trombidiformes: Tetranychidae
- Size
- 0.75 mm to 0.85 mm (smaller than a pinhead)
Natural Habitat
Grassy lawns, gardens, and the exterior/interior walls of buildings, especially during spring and autumn.
Diet & Feeding
Herbivorous; they feed on the sap of over 200 different plant species, including grasses, clovers, and ornamental flowers.
Behavior Patterns
They are often noticed when they migrate in huge numbers into homes through cracks and windows. They do not fly or jump; they move relatively slowly on their long front legs. They reproduce parthenogenetically (without mating).
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite humans or pets and do not transmit diseases. The primary risk is that they leave a reddish-brown stain if crushed on fabrics or walls, which is actually their body fluid (pigment) rather than blood. They are considered a nuisance pest.
