Bird Nest Fungus / Sphaerobolus (Artillery Fungus)

Natural Habitat

Commonly found in damp environment, decaying wood, and especially landscape mulch near buildings.

Diet & Feeding

Saprotrophic; it gains nutrients by decomposing organic matter like wood chips and mulch.

Behavior Patterns

While technically a fungus and not a bug, it is often mistaken for one. It uses hydraulic pressure to 'fire' or jettison its black spore masses up to 20 feet away toward light sources.

Risks & Benefits

Non-toxic to humans/pets and beneficial for decomposition. However, it is a nuisance pest because the sticky spores are extremely difficult to remove from house siding and car paint.
