Springtail

Natural Habitat

Found in damp environments, soil, leaf litter, decaying wood, and occasionally indoors near moisture sources like bathrooms, kitchen sinks, or damp fabric/bedding.

Diet & Feeding

Detritivores; they feed on decaying organic matter, bacteria, pollen, algae, lichen, and fungal spores.

Behavior Patterns

Named for their furcula (a tail-like appendage) which allows them to jump several inches when threatened. They do not fly. They thrive in high humidity and often aggregate in large numbers.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans and pets (they do not bite, sting, or damage structural wood). Beneficial to ecosystems as they help break down organic matter and enrich soil. Can be a nuisance pest indoors if humidity is too high.
