Drain Fly Larva

Scientific Name: Psychodidae family (e.g., Clogmia albipunctata)

Order & Family: Order: Diptera, Family: Psychodidae

Size: 3 to 10 mm in length

Drain Fly Larva

Natural Habitat

Moist environments containing organic matter, such as drains, sewage pipes, septic tanks, and wet soil.

Diet & Feeding

Decomposing organic matter, algae, bacteria, and fungi (biofilm) within plumbing systems.

Behavior Patterns

The larvae live within the gelatinous film found in drains. They are remarkably resilient to high temperatures and low oxygen. After pupating, they emerge as fuzzy, heart-shaped adult flies.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans and do not bite. They act as decomposers by breaking down organic sludge. However, their presence indicates a buildup of biofilm or a slow-moving drain, and they can be a nuisance in kitchens and bathrooms.
