Natural Habitat

Fields, meadows, and gardens; often attracted to artificial lights at night.

Diet & Feeding

Adults generally eat nectar, pollen, flowers, and sometimes soft-bodied insects. Larvae (wireworms) feed on decaying plant matter or roots.

Behavior Patterns

Notable for their clicking mechanism; if flipped on their back, they use a prosternal spine to snap into the air and right themselves. They are nocturnal and active flyers.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans as they do not bite or sting. The larvae (wireworms) can be agricultural pests by damaging the roots of cereal crops and potatoes.
