Natural Habitat

Found in gardens, lawns, and landscapes; native to East Asia but common in the northeastern United States.

Adults feed on the foliage and flowers of over 100 different plants including fruit trees and ornamentals; larvae (grubs) eat the roots of grasses and weeds.

Behavior Patterns

They are nocturnal, emerging from the soil at night to feed and are highly attracted to bright lights. During the day, they hide in the soil or under leaf litter.

Risks & Benefits

They are considered a minor to moderate agricultural and garden pest due to foliage damage and root consumption by larvae; they pose no direct physical risk or sting hazard to humans.
