Diet & Feeding

Herbivorous; they feed exclusively on the juices of mesquite trees, specifically the tender pods, seeds, and stems using piercing-sucking mouthparts.

Behavior Patterns

Nymphs are often brightly colored (red and white) and gregarious, while adults are dark with yellowish markings. They are most active during late spring and summer. They can fly but are generally slow-moving.

Risks & Benefits

They are generally harmless to humans but can produce a pungent odor from scent glands if disturbed. They may cause minor cosmetic damage to mesquite trees but are not considered a significant pest or ecological threat.
