Fruit fly larva (maggot)
Drosophila melanogaster
- Order & Family
- Order Diptera, Family Drosophilidae
- Size
- 3 mm to 5 mm (approx. 1/8 to 3/16 inch) when fully grown
Natural Habitat
Found near decaying organic matter, ripening or rotting fruit, and moist environments such as drain pipes or trash cans.
Diet & Feeding
Feeds primarily on microorganisms like yeast found in fermenting fruit and vegetables, as well as the decaying plant matter itself.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae hatch within 24–30 hours of egg-laying and spend several days eating and growing through three molting stages (instars) before leaving the food source to pupate.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans but considered a nuisance and food contaminate. They can accidentally introduce bacteria to food sources; however, they are essential in research for genetics and developmental biology.
