Natural Habitat

Commonly found indoors in dark, undisturbed areas like closets, attics, along baseboards, in carpets, and under furniture. They can also be found in bird nests or bee hives outdoors.

Diet & Feeding

They feed on natural fibers and dead animal products, including wool, silk, fur, feathers, leather, pet dander, lint, and dried plant products.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae prefer dark, secluded places and are often found infesting stored clothing or carpets. They molt several times, leaving behind shed skins that look like hollow shells of the larvae. They avoid light and move relatively slowly.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Major household pest that can cause significant damage to carpets, clothing, and upholstery made of natural fibers. Some people may develop contact dermatitis (skin irritation) from the bristles of the larvae. Benefits: In nature, they act as decomposers, breaking down dead animal matter.
