Drain Fly Larvae
Psychodidae family
- Order & Family
- Order Diptera, Family Psychodidae
- Size
- 4 mm to 10 mm in length
Natural Habitat
Found in moist areas with organic buildup, such as drains, sink overflows, septic tanks, and wet soil.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on the gelatinous film or slime (biofilm) that accumulates on the sides of drains and pipes, consisting of fungi, bacteria, and algae.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae are aquatic or semi-aquatic; they stay submerged in organic sludge and are difficult to wash away due to their ability to grip surfaces. They eventually pupate and emerge as fuzzy, moth-like adult flies.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite and are generally harmless to humans, though they can be a nuisance in large numbers. While they help break down organic matter in drains, their presence often indicates a need for plumbing maintenance or cleaning.
