Natural Habitat

The scalp and hair of the human head, typically remaining close to the scalp for warmth and food.

Diet & Feeding

Obligate parasites that feed exclusively on human blood several times a day.

Behavior Patterns

They are wingless and cannot fly or jump; they move by crawling. Females lay eggs (nits) and glue them to hair shafts close to the scalp. They can only survive for about 24 to 48 hours away from a human host.

Risks & Benefits

They cause intense itching and scalp irritation. While they do not transmit diseases, scratching can lead to secondary bacterial skin infections. They offer no benefits to humans or the ecosystem.
