Flat-backed Millipede (Greenhouse Millipede)
Scientific Name: Oxidus gracilis
Order & Family: Order: Polydesmida, Family: Paradoxosomatidae
Size: Approximately 18 to 23 mm (0.7 to 0.9 inches) in length.

Natural Habitat
Typically found in moist environments such as decaying leaf litter, soil, under rocks, and in rotting wood. They are also common pests in greenhouses and damp basements.
Diet & Feeding
Detritivores; they primarily feed on decaying organic matter, dead plant material, and moist rotting wood. They occasionally feed on young seedling roots.
Behavior Patterns
They are nocturnal and avoid light. When threatened, they do not coil into a tight spiral like many other millipedes but still curl slightly. They often migrate in mass numbers after heavy rains or during mating seasons.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans (they do not bite or sting). However, they can secrete a fluid containing cyanide compounds that smells like toasted almonds and can irritate sensitive skin or eyes. They are beneficial decomposers in nature but can be nuisance pests in gardens or homes.
