Carpet Moth Larva (Case-bearing Clothes Moth)
Scientific Name: Tinea pellionella
Order & Family: Order: Lepidoptera; Family: Tineidae
Size: Larvae typically 1/4 to 1/2 inch (7-12 mm)

Natural Habitat
Indoor environments, particularly dark, undisturbed areas like closets, underneath rugs, or behind baseboards.
Diet & Feeding
Natural fibers including wool, silk, fur, feathers, and lint, as well as proteinaceous debris like skin cells or pet hair.
Behavior Patterns
The larva builds a silken case around itself, often incorporating fibers from the material it is eating for camouflage. As they grow, they drag this case with them. They prefer low light and can be difficult to spot until damage is visible.
Risks & Benefits
No health risks to humans or pets (no biting/stinging), but they are a significant pest that can cause extensive structural damage to rugs, clothing, and upholstery. They have no environmental benefits in a home setting.
