Dermanyssini or Ornithonyssus species
- Order & Family
- Order Mesostigmata, Family Dermanyssidae or Macronyssidae
- Size
- Approximately 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm (barely visible to the naked eye, often looking like moving specks of dust).
Natural Habitat
Typically found in bird nests, but may migrate into indoor structures (windowsills, ceilings, bedding) when their avian hosts leave the nest.
Diet & Feeding
Blood from birds (secondary hosts include humans and other mammals when bird hosts are unavailable).
Behavior Patterns
They are semi-transparent until feeding, after which they appear reddish or mahogany. They are most active at night and tend to congregate near host resting areas.
