Natural Habitat

Typically found in bird nests, but may migrate into indoor structures (windowsills, ceilings, bedding) when their avian hosts leave the nest.

Diet & Feeding

Blood from birds (secondary hosts include humans and other mammals when bird hosts are unavailable).

Behavior Patterns

They are semi-transparent until feeding, after which they appear reddish or mahogany. They are most active at night and tend to congregate near host resting areas.

Risks & Benefits

They do not transmit diseases to humans but cause intense itching, skin irritation, and dermatitis through their bites. Benefits are negligible as they are parasitic pests.
