Natural Habitat
High-moisture environments such as bathrooms, kitchens, basements, potted plant soil, and under sinks. Outdoors, they live in soil, leaf litter, and other damp, organic-rich areas.
Diet & Feeding
Feeds on fungi, mold, algae, and decaying organic matter. They are detritivores.
Behavior Patterns
Known for their ability to jump when disturbed by using a spring-like appendage called a furcula located on their underside. They are wingless and do not fly. They are attracted to and thrive in damp conditions.
Risks & Benefits
Springtails are considered harmless to humans, pets, and building structures. They do not bite, sting, or transmit diseases. Their presence in large numbers indoors can be a nuisance and is often an indicator of a moisture problem, such as a water leak or high humidity. In the ecosystem, they are beneficial decomposers.
