Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on natural fibers and animal products including wool, silk, feathers, fur, and dead insects; adults feed on pollen and nectar.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae are scavengers and move slowly; they tend to prefer dark, undisturbed areas. They undergo several molts before pupating and can survive for long periods without food.
Risks & Benefits
Larvae can be significant household pests, damaging clothing, upholstery, and carpets. Some individuals may experience allergic reactions or skin irritation (carpet beetle dermatitis) from contact with the larval hairs. They provide no significant benefits to humans indoors.
