Natural Habitat

Orchards, vineyards, forests, and residential areas; highly associated with the Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima).

Diet & Feeding

Generalist phloem feeders that suck sap from over 70 species of plants, including grapes, hops, stone fruits, and hardwood trees.

Behavior Patterns

Nymphs are active crawlers and jumpers that move frequently up and down plant stems and trunks to feed. They undergo four nymphal stages before becoming winged adults.

Risks & Benefits

Highly invasive and destructive agricultural pest. Feeding causes plant stress and the secretion of sticky honeydew promotes the growth of damaging sooty mold. They have no significant benefits to non-native ecosystems.
